Top Tips on How to Get Back into Reading

Books and Reading

2 Jul

Are you trying to get back into reading? Maybe you used to read, but lately, it seems like there just isn’t enough time for it? Well, you are not alone. Here I will be sharing with you my top tips on how to get back into reading. So many people have given up on hobbies and things they genuinely enjoy because they don’t have the time in between work, kids, and all of the other adult responsibilities.

So if this sounds like you, I want to let you know there is hope! No, it is not easy to make time for the things you enjoy, but it is essential.

Here are my top tips on how to get back into reading!

1. The big key: Find the right books

If you don’t have the right book, you are not going to read it. It is as simple as that. One of the most important things I can recommend is that you find a genre that you enjoy reading. For some it is nonfiction, for others (like me) it is a historical mystery.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to find what you are drawn to. It might take a few tries, but once you figure out what genre you are excited about, you will be much more motivated to read! So go out there and try out a few different books and see what you like the best!

2. Keep a running list of books you want to read

One way I keep myself motivated and excited about reading is by keeping a running list of everything I want to read.

If I hear about a book that sounds interesting, I write it down. If I am browsing Amazon or Pinterest, I make sure to jot down the titles of all the books that sound interesting to me. Give it a try and I am sure that it will help! Then when you are done with a book write a short paragraph of your thoughts about it and whether or not you would read another from that author. That way finding the next book to read won’t be so hard!

3. Reading something exciting like a YA novel or thriller

My next suggestion is to find an exciting book that will keep you interested. Now, this could look very different for each individual, but in general, some genres are more exciting than others. I find that YA books, thrillers, or adventures are great choices when I get into a reading rut.

YA books are simply fun and enjoyable. Thrillers are usually the ones that keep you on the edge of your seat with excitement and anticipation. Adventure stories are another great genre that you will have a hard time putting down as they are full of action.

Any book that is exciting for you is a good choice! Think about your hobbies and likes. If you enjoy traveling around the world, maybe look for a book where it takes you on an adventure into the wild unknown! (Clive Cussler’s books are great for that!) If you love to cook or bake, try to find a book that takes you on a journey through cooking! There are no limits! The goal is to have fun!

4. Reread an old favorite

My next tip is to reread an old favorite. Rereading a favorite book is like visiting an old friend. I take comfort in my favorite books and no matter how many times I read them, they are still just as memorable.

Think back to when you were young. What books did you enjoy reading the most? Was it the Harry Potter Series? Maybe Treasure Island? Pick a book that makes you happy. Soon you will find yourself reminiscing and remembering what made you love reading in the first place!

5. Join a Bookclub

Another fun way to get back into reading is to join a book club! And if there isn’t one that you can find close by, maybe you could create one with your group of friends.

For a book lover, reading and then getting together with others to talk about the book is so much fun. You meet new people, gain new perspectives, and it will help you stay motivated to finish what you are reading. If you haven’t already experienced a book club, I highly recommend any book lover give it a try! Come join our book club here at Sweet and Sunny Living!

Even if it has been a while, there is hope!

No matter how long it has been since you last picked up a book, you can make it a habit again. Once you find your groove again, you will be thinking to yourself… how did I ever stop reading, to begin with?!

Reading is a way to escape the world and troubles around you. You can forget your stresses and worries, just for a little while. Reading can take you on adventures to new worlds, other times, and faraway lands. There are so many benefits to spending more time reading. The world today is chaotic and upside down. Picking up a book can take you away from your troubles and let you relax. So if it has been a while since you last read a book, it is about time you started reading again!
